A word about RFID
No technology is perfect and each one has its advantages and disadvantages. RFID is a mature technology and , yet, as in any project, one needs to be prepared when using it. You can’t just place a few RFID readers and antennas, stick some tags to your products and expect to get the perfect results you want.
Some people tend to compare RFID with bar-codes. Both are excelent solutions, depending on the application and process. Some may say that RFID is still unreliable because water, metal and liquid may prevent tags from being read by an RFID reader. That may be true and that is why your project needs to be well planned. However, there are also many potential risks in using bar-code readers, as they tend to require the operator to read items one by one, resulting in long and time-consuming processes for controlling products. In general, the longer the process, the more it becomes susceptible to human errors, spreading inconsistencies along the company’s business chain.
It would also be unfair to say that RFID is unreliable because some tags may not be appropriately read by an RFID reader in a specific environment or situation. This would be similar to stating that computers are unreliable because they are susceptible to virus. Companies don’t hold themselves from using computers , simply because they know that, when they are appropriately applied, they can tremendously improve business activities. It is the same case with RFID. When RFID is appropriately applied and well integrated to your company’s processes, it can definitely increase your company’s productivity and create outstanding positive results.
